Lexus in Design

We partnered with Lexus to create Lexus in Design: Liminal Cycles, an interactive, multi-sensory installation featured during Miami Art & Design Week 2024. This collaboration fully integrated sustainable material innovation within a luxury context, showcasing the potential of bio-based materials that are durable, scalable, and responsive. These materials, envisioned for potential use in the automotive industry, could reduce emissions during production and, after years of service, be composted to nourish the soil for future plant growth.

The installation explored the concept of intelligent materials that dynamically respond to their environment. Utilizing solar-active bioplastics that reacted to UV exposure by changing color in real time, the installation visually communicated environmental data, creating an immersive and engaging experience for visitors.

Over 100 biomaterial samples were developed for this project, primarily featuring Nuatan, an innovative bioplastic by Crafting Plastics made entirely from renewable polymers such as sugars and starches. Fully compostable, the installation ensured that all components could be dismantled and either recycled or biodegraded, reflecting Lexus’ commitment to environmental sustainability.

A notable milestone was the integration of a scent-releasing mechanism into biodegradable objects, adding a multi-sensory layer to the experience. The scent was designed to trigger memory and deepen the connection between visitors and natural materials, highlighting the sensory potential of biobased innovations. This blend of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability aimed to deliver not just a visually stunning installation but also a powerful message about the future of circular materials and design.

Liminal Cycles was on display in the sculpture garden at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) in December 2024.
